About in the middle of the drive out to the tip, is a campground called, originally enough, Cape San Blas Campground. It's small and kind of primative, (only 4 sites with sewer hookup and about 15 with just water & electric) but it is right on the Gulf of Mexico. They have cabins as well as campsites. Due to construction regulations, it is seperated from the beach by the sand dunes, and only a few non hookup sites can see the water. Don't let this detract from the place. It is great.
If you are a seafood lover, it is the place to be. This is not a lie! You just walk along the beach in water up to your ankles with a long handled net and scoop the blue crabs up. We could fill a 5 gallon bucket in about an hour. If you have a boat. bring it, if not, rent one. Go on the bay side and go out to about waist deep water and pick up all the scallops you want. Again, four people can fill a 5 gallon bucket in about an hour. We ate like kings all the while we were there. Can you imagine trying to find enough scallop recipes so you can have them a different way every day? Off course the only way to have blue crabs is steamed with spices and garlic. Hors douvers like that every day. I can't stand it. I want to go back right now.
Here are some pictures for proof.
Now that I've got you hooked, you can go see their own web site. That is how I found about the place the first time, but don't forget to come right back and visit my other favorite haunts. Off to Cape San Blas.
